Week 9 - Thursday

'89 San Francisco vs. '15 Arizona San Francisco traveled to Arizona... The Niners got off to a good start, scoring on the opening drive on a 4 yard run by Roger Craig. Moments later, Carson Palmer came to life with a series of throws, ending with a 13 yard pass to Fells to tie the game. Just seconds before the first quarter was over, Montana came back, finding Rice in the end zone on a 4 yarder to take the lead. It was at this point, however, that some wires got crossed. Arizona's defense would find a way to hold off the Niners for the rest of the game, and the Niners D couldn't contain Arizona either. Palmer would throw for 325 yards and 2 TD's with laser accuracy, completing an outstanding 23/29 attempts. Larry Fitzgerald came up the biggest target, taking 10 catches for 133 yards. On special teams, Johnson had a 94 yard kick return for a TD, and Catanzaro was 100% on the day, hitting 6 PATs and 1 FG. For the Niners, Craig had a big game, averaging...

'72 Miami (5-1) vs. '76 Pittsburgh (3-3) The Dolphins travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers, and each team is looking desperate for the win. With a loss, Miami could slip to 2nd place in the AFC East, where 2 other teams have 2 loss records. With a win, Pittsburgh could sit on top of their division. The weather in Pittsburgh was great but a bit breezy, as the Dolphins lined up to kick to the Steelers. Miami's "No Name Defense" made quick work of Bradshaw, (INT?) giving Miami the ball with great field position. But the Steel Curtain held the Dolphins to a FG. And no sooner than Pittsburgh had the ball again, history would repeat itself as Miami took the ball back again, but settled for 3. From that point, both teams struggled to move the ball as defenses put the pressure on. Pittsburgh failed to find much footing at all, and Morrall would continue to struggle with his throws and the Steelers held off the usually brutal Dolphins run game. Luck wou...

'13 Seattle (6-1) vs. '98 Atlanta (3-4) The top team from the NFC West took on the bottom team from the NFC South, in what was expected to be a great game. 2 explosive offenses, 2 unforgiving defenses - all met up to...well cause a big sloppy mess. Russell Wilson looked good on the day, hitting 65% of his throws and spreading 253 yards across 9 receivers. But his inability to get into the endzone, coupled with Marshawn Lynch's inability to run anywhere, kept the Seahawks from coming up with anything more than a FG on the day. The Atlanta defense had 6 sacks on the day against Wilson, making his job harder. But it was Chandler's laser efficiency and 3 TD's, with just over 220 yards passing, that proved deadliest for the Seahawks. Jamal Anderson also supported with 134 yards on the day. So Seattle takes their first loss on the road, breaking their 6 game win streak and Atlanta is now 3-1 at home. Final score Atlanta 38, Seattle 3 '17 Philadelphia (3-...

Week 8 - Thursday

'75 Minnesota vs. '91 Washington The Redskins travel to Minnesota fresh off a win to take on the 3-4 Vikings. The Skins, despite being on top of the NFC East, are one game from being knocked down. The Vikings have shown some impressive ability all year, but need a big win to start moving up. Minnesota took an early lead with 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter, as Tarkenton hit Gilliam on a 13 yard throw. Later, the Skins retaliated, putting together a nice drive, in which Riggs easily blew past the Purple People Eaters for the 1 yard score. Unfortunately for Washington, Tarkenton wasn't quite done yet. In fact, with 21 / 29 on the day, it was rare Tarkenton wouldn't make a good throw. Early in the 2nd quarter he found Foreman for 11 yards to put Minnesota ahead again. The Redskins on offense again just couldn't move, and being pinned on their own 1, tried to punt to get some room. But Minnesota came up with a huge block that was taken for the TD, and Minnes...

Week 7 - Monday

'07 New England vs. '68 NY Jets Tonight's game is an AFC East showdown between the #2 and #3 teams. Each has 4 wins so far in the year, but NY has had a bye week already. Both teams are 2-1 against the AFC, but the Jets are on a 2 game win streak right, where New England is coming off a difficult loss from last week. The Jets would elect to receive, but it would be 10 minutes in before any team would find a way to score, after several 3 and outs. Brady, who put together a great drive with some throws to Moss, found himself fought off at the 15 and settling for 3 from a still perfect Gostkowski. The remainder of the 1st quarter would see back-to-=back turnovers, with Brady being picked But it wouldn't take much for Brady to retaliate with a 28 yard throw to Welker, setting up for an easy TD pass to Gaffney. Despite playing great defense, picking off Brady again and holding him for the quarter, Namath just couldn't quite get the big plays we saw from him in la...

Week 7 - Sunday

'98 Atlanta vs. '73 Los Angeles The Falcons got off to a great start against the Rams, in what would prove to be a well matched game. Jamal Anderson got an early TD run to give Atlanta the lead, but Hadl retaliated later, finding Bertelsen for a 29 yard end zone throw. From there, each team traded FG's, keeping the score tied at as an explosive 2nd quarter got started. Both teams fought for control, but Los Angeles broke through the Falcons D midway as Baker went 9 yards for the score to take the lead. But Chandler would put together a good drive of his own after, giving Jamal Anderson room to make another TD run and tie things up with just 3 minutes in the half. The Rams' Bryant, not content with a tie, put Atlanta in a tough spot after taking the next kickoff 91 yards for a score. It's at this point Atlanta showed their grit, as Chandler got just shy of the goal, letting Andersen bring in a FG before the half. From there, the Rams' lead would find itse...

Week 7 - Thursday

'69 Kansas City vs. '97 Denver The Chiefs traveled to Mile High Stadium to take on the Broncos in a showdown between two teams that have simple struggled to win this season. Both teams are 1-5, and both teams are at the bottom of the AFC West. The team that gets a win could still have some hope at a long shot for the playoffs. The Chiefs would take the opening kickoff, and Dawson would put together a great drive, pushing down the field to setup for a 14 yard run by McVea for a TD. When Elway got his chance, he found himself picked off by Kansas City, foreshadowing the struggle he would have all game to score. Lucky for Elway, Denver's defense held off Dawson for the rest of the 1st quarter, giving him a shot to get in range for an Elam FG from 37 yards out. But Dawson quickly adapted with the help of Garrett, who brought in a 2 yard TD to put Kansas City up 14-3. That drive somehow set Elway on fire, who worked just inside the 2 minute warning to put together a ...

Week 6 - Monday Night

'91 Detroit vs. '62 Green Bay The '91 Lions traveled to Lambeau Field looking for a victory against their division leaders, the '62 Packers, who remain undefeated at home so far this year. The weather in Green Bay was great, and the Packers opened the game with the 1st possession. Starr had no problem driving off the Lions, spending over 7 minutes wearing them down to eventually pickup the 1st TD on a short pass to Carpenter. Starr would later fire another throw to McGree for 7 more points after Taylor came through with a 21 yard run. Taylor averaged 5 yards a carry with 114 yards on the day. Detroit, on the other hand, had as much trouble moving the ball as they did stopping the Packers. While Barry Sanders easily broke 100 yards, Kramer and Peete both only completed 1/3 of their throws for a total 75 yards. Lombardi's secondary had no problem breaking up passes, picking off the Lions 3 times. Detroit would come close to scoring a few times, but the Packe...

Week 6 - Sunday

'15 Carolina vs. '02 Tampa Bay The Buccaneers hosted the Panthers at Raymond James Stadium with over 64,000 in attendance for a highly anticipated divisional matchup. Both teams were 3-2 going in, and while the Buccs have some big wins under their belt, they remain just under the Panthers in a very competitive NFC South.  Carolina defense dominated the 1st half, holding Brad Johnson and the Buccs from scoring until the last minute, when Keyshawn Johnson followed up an amazing 75 yard catch with a 1 yarder to put 6 on the board. The Carolina offense had 13 points of their own to that point, with Gano hitting 2 FG's and Jamal Stewart grabbing a rushing TD. The 2nd half looked little different. While Carolina struggled for rushing yard, with Tolbert and Newton sharing just 83 yards for the day, the Carolina D held the Buccs back again in the 3rd quarter, while Stewart ran in another 1 yarder to put the Panthers up 20-7. The 4th quarter looked like it would be more...

Week 6 - Thursday

New England vs. New York Giants Welcome to another exciting week of LFL action. In tonight's game, the '86 Giants travel to take on the Patriots. The Patriots come off a disappointing loss last week, but they're facing a Giants team that is just struggling to win games at all. The Patriots scored on the opening kickoff as Hobbs ran 84 yards for the score. With such an easy lead, the Patriots can be tough to stop. But the New York defense rose to the occasion early on. From there, Simms tried to get some forward progress, but Brady was the only one finding holes to exploit. First, Brady nailed a 40 yard pass to Randy Moss, getting in range for an easy FG to put the Patriots up 10-0, and momentum from there was much the same. Simms put together a good drive to setup for an Allegre FG, and the Giants held off the Patriots from  there to head to halftime 13-3. The Giants would get the ball in the 3rd quarter, and after a few empty drives, got their first TD after a pa...

Week 5 - Monday

'89 San Francisco vs. '69 Cleveland The 49ers and the Browns faced off at Candlestick Park, the last remaining teams who have yet to find a mark in the W column this season. One team would go home with hope, the other with a soul crushing gut check. So how did it go? Well if the weather would be any sign, the game would be a sloppy wet mess as a tropical storm found itself near the Bay area.  And at first, both teams were coming up empty with lost yards and imssed passes. But finally, Montana would find Rice 3 time on a drive, and Rice would take one of those catches 46 yards for the first San Francisco TD. Cofer's PAT failed, in what would be a sign of things to come for the Niners team. Early in the 4th quarter, the Niners D would continue to hold off the Browns, many times giving their offense great field position. After a couple important interceptions, the Niners were able to get more numbers on the board. On 1 drive, Roger Craig ran 28 yards for a TD, and la...

Week 5 - Sunday

Jacksonville vs. Carolina The '99 Jaguars took on the '15 Panthers in what was almost a 1-sided romp. After receiving the kickoff, the Jaguars scored in just 2 plays with a 39 yard throw to McCardell. This would prove an eerie sign of things to come. Carolina's defense looked strong early on, grabbing even a Safety against Jacksonville. But the Jaguars defense held tight and would not let Carolina score. For the next 3 quarters, Brunell would throw for 200 more yards and 2 TD's while Carolina kept coming up empty. With a 27-2 lead in the 4th quarter, nobody expected anything from Carolina. So Panthers fans likely found it refreshing when Newton found a way to complete his passes, hitting over 65% for 180 yards. And with 7 minutes left, the Panthers got their first TD. But it wasn't until 20 seconds were left on the clock that he Newton was able to find Olson for another score, leaving the Panthers to come up short 27-16. Jacksonville remains undefeated while the Pa...

Week 5 - Thursday

LA Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks On the opening drive, Golden Tate came up with big play after big play for the Seahawks, getting Wilson and crew to the _ yard line, where Wilson took home an easy score on the sneak. From there, Los Angeles struggled to score, and the Seahawks were able to turnover the ball and grab another easy touchdown to lead 14-0 after just the first quarter. If that wasn't enough, the next opportunity the Seahawks got, it was Marshawn Lynch coming up with big plays, bringing Seattle just outside FG range. After the punt, the Legion of Boom did not let up, and Los Angeles struggled to have ball possession. Los Angeles got their break after Hadl got a 31 yard pass to Jackson, setting up for a nice FG to get some skin in the game. After a great run by McCutcheon, the Rams were able to get in range for 3 more and went to the locker room down only 14-6 and with receiving favor in the 3rd quarter. Could they pull in closer? The 2nd half saw a bigger struggl...
