Week 13 - Thanksgiving Special

Image
This crucial week of LFL action starts off with not 1, not 2 but 3 games - a Thanksgiving Triple Header. With so many playoff spots still up for grabs, each week gets more important. '85 Chicago vs. '91 Detroit Previously, Detroit was able to beat the Chicago bears off a strong effort from Barry Sanders. Over 73,000 fans showed up the Pontiac Silverdome to see if it could happen again. After almost 13 minutes of stalemate in the 1st quarter, Detroit found their stride, grabbing 10 points in just 2 minutes of play after a McMahon interception was turned into a 27 yard TD pass by Kramer. Detroit's defense kept strong and forced another 3 and out on Chicago, using their next possession to quickly put 7 more on the board, after a huge running effort from Sanders and Jackson. Up 17-0, McMahon switched up his passing game some and was able to hit McKinnon in the flat, who ran the remaining 66 yards for an exciting score. Chicago would only be down 20-7 at the half. ...

Week 12 - Monday

'00 Ravens vs. '73 Rams The 5-5 Ravens took on the 5-5 Rams at home, each looking for the win to move up in their division. With so many teams at 5-5, 6-5, 4-7 in the LFL, the playoff picture is still very murky. For much of the first half, this game was one of wits, with each team testing the other, and each team grabbing a FG for their efforts. The Rams would change all that, when McCutcheon blew past Baltimore's defense and sprinted 46 yards for the score with just 3:00 left. The Ravens offense easily got moving from there, however, and took the safe FG before half to trail 10-6. The 3rd quarter saw lots of long drives and slow progress, but each team put a TD on the scoreboard. Baltimore, still trailing by 4, had an entire 4th quarter to take over. And early on, they had the momentum to do so. With 11 minutes still remaining in the game, Stover booted a kick through the uprights to put the Ravens within 1 point. Unfortunately for Baltimore, the Los Angeles d...

'72 Miami vs. '69 Cleveland Miami got an early lead on Cleveland as their rush attack pushed through the end zone with 6:23 left in the 1st quarter. But Cleveland's Nelsen would quickly retaliate, putting together 2 scoring drives in the 2nd quarter, both tosses from over 30 yards out. Up 14-7, Miami got the ball outside the 2 minute warning, and Morrall was able to score on a 10 yard throw to Warfield for a first half tie. As the 3rd quarter opened, Miami would get the ball again, and Cleveland was powerless against their continued running game as Ginn powered in for an easy 1 yarder to go up 21-14. For 10 minutes, both teams would remain at stalemate until Cleveland was able to settle for a FG from just 28 yards out. Cockroft was good on the attempt and Cleveland's hopes for a 4th quarter remained high, especially as the Browns defense continued to hold offthe Dolphins. But as Cleveland entered the red zone again halfway in the 4th quarter, they...

Week 12 - Thursday

'12 Texans vs. '68 Colts After last week's loss, the 5-5 Colts were looking to get back in the fight against the 6-4 Texans. With so many teams in the league at 6-4 and 5-5, every win at this point still counts towards playoff hopes. The Colts would be travelling to Houston for the showdown, and the 67,000 fans in the stadiums definitely got a showdown. Early in the game, Houston grabbed the first score after an impressive 46 yard dash from K. Martin. From there, Baltimore's defense was able to hold Houston and give the Colts a chance at the ball. And while it took them some time to move, just as they hit the red zone, Hill darted 20 yards to tie the game up. In the 2nd quarter, both teams would continue battling for position, but only Houston would come on top, grabbing 2 FG's along the way to head into half-time 13-7. The Colts would get the ball in the 2nd half, and after a great kick return, had no problems breaking down the Texans, as Matte picked u...

Week 11 - Monday

'69 Chiefs vs. '79 San Diego Over 92,000 fans were screaming at the LA Memorial Coliseum to see their 6-4 Chargers, who fell from 6-1 to lose 3 straight, have a shot at redemption. They face the 5-5 Chiefs, who are on a 2 game win streak. The Chargers took the opening kickoff, and Fouts easily hit one receiver after another to score the game's first TD, hitting Joiner for 10 yards. But the Chiefs' next possession was even quicker, ending after just 3 plays. With Holmes running for 31 yards, he was given the ball twice more, eventually scoring on a 13 yard carry. The Chiefs sent the clear message - that the Chargers did not have an easy opponent. The Chiefs weren't done shocking the Chargers either. On San Diego's next possession, the deadly Red/White forced and recovered a fumble. It would not be the first one to hurt the Chargers. Kansas City would later score on a pass from Dawson to Arbanas to go up 14-7. Fouts got a toss off to Jefferson, who ran 24 ...

'97 Denver vs. '75 Minnesota The Vikings, who have lost 2 games in a row, hosted the Denver Broncos at Metropolitan Stadium, themselves looking for a win. Both teams sit at the bottom of their division, but with the right wins, Minnesota stands to gain ground. The first quarter was all Minnesota, as the Vikings grabbed 2 TD's against a Broncos team that seemed unable to stop the ball or move it. In the 2nd quarter, Elway got a little more movement on the ball, but Terrell Davis was stopped cold each play so Denver had to settle for FG's. Unfortunately for Denver, their defense was still getting destroyed by the Vikings, and Marinaro pulled out a 40 yard run to set the Vikings ahead 21-6 at the half. Things didn't look any better the 2nd half, as Minnesota continued tallying up yards and Denver kept failing to. In fact, the Vikings had a huge day, racking up 478 yards, split evenly between passing and running. Tarkenton hit an astonishing 74% of his throws to...

'76 Pittsburgh vs. '69 Cleveland The 4-5 Steelers take on the struggling Cleveland team at home. Pittsburgh, with a win, looks to continue a fight with it's division rival Ravens. Cleveland, on the other hand, has only to hope for a 50% record. The Steelers got the coin toss and took the first kick, but didn't get anything out of it. Instead, the Steelers and Browns would fight for field position for some time, despite some costly turnovers by Pittsburgh. So with the 1st quarter winding down, the game remained scoreless until Cockroft was able to hit a FG from 47 yards out. As the 2nd quarter opened, Pittsburgh made another great drive after Swann grabbed a 36 yard catch, but a fumble on the next play gave Cleveland possession again. In fact, turnovers continued to be the theme for Pittsburgh. After one such fumble, Johnson got a 30 yard pass from Nelsen, Cleveland was able to setup for another FG and go up 6-0. But with under 2 minutes in the half, Bradshaw s...

'13 Seattle vs. '89 San Francisco The west coast is the focus of tonight's matchup, as the Seahawks travel to Candlestick Park. Both teams are in the NFC West, and much like yesterday's Bears vs. Lions game, the Niners are sitting at the bottom while Seattle has been flying high. In a week where several upsets have happened, does San Francisco have what it takes to turn their luck around? Or will the newly revised** SF team show some muscle? San Francisco chipped away at Seattle early, mixing their dangerous pass attack with some great Roger Craig runs to get into enemy territory. But they would have to try for a FG when the Seattle D bulked up. Cofer's FG, however, was a fat miss. Lucky for him, Seattle's next drive was short lived, as Wilson was picked off by Ronnie Lott. After a strong rush attack, and a 28 yard run by Craig, it seemed as if San Fran would get an easy score. But the Legion of Boom came up huge, forcing SF to another FG, which Cofe...

Week 10 - Sunday

'91 Detroit vs. '85 Chicago The Bears had a visit from the Lions at Soldier Field in a divisional match between the top ranking Bears and the bottom ranking Lions. But rank rarely tells the story in a divisional game, and this was no exception. The Bears ran the Lions all over the field in the 1st quarter. Walter Payton had an easy TD with 2 minutes remaining on the quarter, and the Lions were devastated on the 1st play of their following possession. The Bears D caused a fumble on Barry Sanders and ran 16 yards for another TD. But with a 14-0 lead from the 1st quarter, the Bears wouldn't have so easy a time in the 2nd quarter. In fact, Detroit's defense came up huge, holding McMahon and company out of the end zone. Barry Sanders was finding ways past the Bears D but not finding himself in the end zone. As the 3rd quarter rolled on, the stalemate between the 2 teams continued, and Detroit's hopes seemed dashed. But as the Lions got the ball in the 4th quart...
