Week 5 - Monday

'89 San Francisco vs. '69 Cleveland

The 49ers and the Browns faced off at Candlestick Park, the last remaining teams who have yet to find a mark in the W column this season. One team would go home with hope, the other with a soul crushing gut check. So how did it go?

Well if the weather would be any sign, the game would be a sloppy wet mess as a tropical storm found itself near the Bay area.  And at first, both teams were coming up empty with lost yards and imssed passes. But finally, Montana would find Rice 3 time on a drive, and Rice would take one of those catches 46 yards for the first San Francisco TD. Cofer's PAT failed, in what would be a sign of things to come for the Niners team.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Niners D would continue to hold off the Browns, many times giving their offense great field position. After a couple important interceptions, the Niners were able to get more numbers on the board. On 1 drive, Roger Craig ran 28 yards for a TD, and later would get another one for 11 yards. Everything was lining up the 49ers as they went up 20-0 at the half and were set to receive, giving Cleveland some challenging odds.

So how did they do? After holding the 49'ers for much of the 3rd quarter, Nelsen put together a scoring drive with a toss to Collins  Later, on a controversial 4th and 1 call, the Niners went for an option play and were brought down hard by Cleveland's defense. This gave Cleveland a great shot near the end zone. But before scoring, a loose ball got scooped up by the Niners and things seemed okay in San Francisco again.

But Cleveland wouldn't stay down long, holding the Niners tight and scored on their next drive with a 29 yard pass to Warfield to trail 20-14.

The Niners next possession took just 2 big plays to get them to the 1 yard line, a 53 yard run by Roger Craig and an 18 yard catch by Rice. Cleveland held at the goal line though, and Cofman missed the easy FG as he slipped.

From there, just under the 2 minute warning, Nelsen made an amazing throw to Warfield for 53 yards and another 7 points, giving the Browns a 21-20 edge and a win for the evening. The Niners certainly had their opportunities, but just missed them. Browns 21, 49ers 20

Cleveland's offense looked horrible, but they somehow found a way to capitalize on the right plays. The 49ers had over 400 yards on the day, with Montana passing for 293 of those and Roger Craig running for 133 yards. Jerry Rice and John Taylor both had over 100 yards on the day.

That wraps up week 5, with the 9ers now looking at a long shot to get over in the league. Who knows what will happen next!
