Week 8 Results [GFL]
'10 Atlanta vs. '08 Carolina
The Falcons flew into Carolina ready to keep their dominance over the division. They'd get their way, too, as their defense stopped the Panthers cold in their tracks. The usually wild Panthers were completely shut-out, while Matt Ryan and company did well.
Nobody stood out on offense for Atlanta, but Ryan threw for 2 TD's from his 26 completions, with 289 yards on the day. Snelling and Turner totalled 145 yards on the ground. Carolina as a team struggled to even total 200 yards. Bryant was only 2-4 of FGs, but what he did make boosted the final score to 20-0, Falcons.
'99 Rams vs. '84 Dolphins
The Dolphins were hoping for a break at home, but against the Greatest Show on Turf, had possibly one of the Worst showings of their existence. Even with 26 minutes of possession time, the Dolphins struggled for positive yardage, despite taking much time off the clock. Marino threw for just 1 TD, getting picked off 3 times by the Rams. He completed an uncanny low 16 passes.
Faulk had just 87 yards on the day for St. Louis. Warner hit 28/41 for 297 yards, with 2 TDs. Bruce was the star receiver for Warner with 9 catches for 101 yards. With Wilkins hitting an insane 5/5 on FG's, the Rams win 36-7.
'16 New England vs. '80 Buffalo
Not much was expected out of the Bills for this game, so as the first half wound down to the 2 minute warning, the fact that the game was scoreless was a shock to all watching. With seconds winding down, Brady would finally get his shot at the end zone, hitting Edelman for a 33 yarder.
With just 36 seconds left in the half, a surprise play by the Bills would put them in FG range just 20 seconds later. With Mike-Mayer splitting the uprights, the game went 7-3 at half. The 3rd quarter would be another scoreless one, and the 4th quarter would remain slow for several minutes.
Ferguson would eventually find Brown in the end zone to take the lead, with 8 minutes of game time remaining. Brady would lead the Patriots to retaliate on the next drive, rushing in the TD himself to go ahead again. That would be the last either team would score, as defenses remained in high gear. New England wins 14-10.
The Bills ran up a whopping 202 yards rushing, with Cribb leading on 15 carries for 117 yards. Buffalo also out-gunned the Patriots for yardage, tossing up over 300 yards. In fact, Ferguson almost matched Brady in several categories, completing 67% of his throws and getting 1 TD. He did, however, have 1 INT, and Brady's longest was a 73-yarder. Brady had just 278 yards for the day.
'98 NY Jets vs. '19 Kansas City
The Jets and Chiefs put on one of the best shows all year in Arrowhead Stadium. The Jets were the first team to score, and the only in the 1st quarter. Testaverde hit Johnson in the air, and later would toss another TD to Ward early in 2nd quarter. But immediately on the kickoff, Hardman would sprint 96 yards for a TD to get KC on the scoreboard.
Testaverde continued to light up the scoreboard, scoring just minutes later on his 3rd TD throw, this time to Chrebet. Up 21-7, Mahomes would finally get some momentum going, with help from Williams, who would get the first offensive TD for the Chiefs. After KC finally forcing a 4-and-out on defense, Mahomes would throw a TD pass just inside the 2-minute warning to tie. The Jets were pinned back on the return, but Testaverde managed the clock and his throws to setup a FG just before half.
In the 2nd half, the Chiefs would take the lead with a Williams run after a long drive. But the Jets kept up their momentum, and the teams traded TDs - putting the Chiefs back on top with 8 minutes in the 4th quarter. At this point, the Jets would take a while to move down field, but they did keep moving closer. As the 2-minute warning wound down, they would threaten the red zone. With time winding down, however, it was a last second toss to Johnson from Testaverde that would be the Jets' only chance at winning. NY goes back home with the win, 38-35
Both teams exceeded 500 yards offense, with the Chiefs leaning heavier on the rush than the Jets. McCoy broke 100 yards in just 8 carries, mostly on the 75-yard long sprint he had. Williams ran for just 61 yards. On the Jets, Testaverde ran for as many yards as Martin. However, with 382 passing yards, Testaverde also had a whopping 5 TDs and no picks, despite only completing 26/53. Over 200 of those yards came from 2 receivers having 100+ yard days - Johnson and Chrebet both. Keyshawn Johnson had 3 of the 5 TD's. Mahomes, while slightly more accurate, at 27/45, had just 300 yards and was picked once.
'00 Oakland vs. '87 Cleveland
The Raiders and Browns got into a full game shootout at Cleveland Stadium. The Browns led 14-3 at the end of the 1st quarter with 2 TD passes from Kosar. Kosar would toss for a 3rd TD in the 2nd quarter, but not until the Raiders would get their first TD on a Wheatley run.
The lead for the Browns would start to shrink in the 3rd quarter, as Wheatley ran in 2 back-to-back TD's in response to a 4th TD pass by Kosar earlier. With the 28-24 score at 4th quarter, Cleveland would start open their running game a bit more, increasing their lead to 35-24 on a run by Mack. But Oakland was only gaining steam, and with 2 TD passes inside the 5 minutes mark, had a 3 point edge for the first team. So when Cleveland moved into enemy territory inside the 2-minute warning, defense was on high alert. The Raiders would keep the Browns out of the red zone, but not before they would tie the game on a last second FG. Game ends in a tie, 38-38
Kosar lit up the scoreboard for the Browns, while Wheatley and Gannon were both highlights for Oakland. Kosar was on fire, completing 38/47 for 437 yards and 4 TD's. Newsome and Mack had 8 and 7 receptions each, but Newsome was the only receiver in orange to break 100 yards. Gannon had a good day, but came in with only 61% completion for 290 yards and 2 TD's. Tim Brown was his top receiver at 110 yards in 6 catches. And, as usual, Wheatley broke 100 yards on the day easily with his longest a 50-yarder.
'98 Minnesota vs. '01 Green Bay
The Vikings have been unpredictable lately, looking less dominant than during their early stretch in the league. So as they travelled to take on the ever-consistent Packers, they'd need a strong showing.
After a decent start, the Vikings answers a GB TD pass. But when Favre hit Schroeder for a 53-yarder shortly after, it was clear some defensive adjustments were needed. It would take another TD from GB before Minnesota could answer, however, leaving the Vikings down just 21-14 at the half.
By the 2nd quarter, it was clear Green Bay had Minnesota's numbers, as the Pack shut down the Vikings for 2 straight goose eggs. Favre continued to have no problems tossing past the Vikings' secondary, throwing 3 TD passes to match his 3 from the first quarter. Along with a score on special teams with a 66 yard punt return, Green Bay had no problems winning. Packers 52, Vikings 14
In addition to the 6 TD's, Brett Favre passed for 444 yards in 31 completions., averaging over 14 yards / catch. He was picked just once. Cunningham looked abysmal, completing just 16 throws for 247 yards. Perhaps the biggest player of the game was Schroeder, who averaged almost 25 yards / catch for Green Bay across his 9 receptions. At 223 yards total, he had 3 of the 6 TD throws for the team. Green also broke 100 yards rushing on the day.
'07 Indianapolis vs. '70 Detroit
The Colts stunned the Lions 44-21, after performing well in the 2nd and 4th quarters. Detroit was consistent, with Munson hitting a few long TD throws. But Manning and crew dominated, scoring 17 points alone in the 2nd quarter and 20 points in the 4th. Manning simply became the driving force behind each TD, and setup for several FG's as well.
Munson had a pick for each TD throw, and just barely approached 200 yards throwing. Add in an absent rushing game, and Detroit was doomed to stop the Colts. Sanders did well, catching 7 balls for 145 yards, but those numbers paled to the Colts. Manning completed 31/48 for a whopping 470 yards and 2 TD's. Half his completions went to Wayne and Clark, with Wayne dominating at 11 catches for 206 yards. Clark still broke 100 yards, as did Addai on the ground.
'93 Oilers vs. '81 Bengals
The Oilers had several chances to score against the Bengals, but after settling for several FG's instead, were not able to come up with a win. The Bengals fared only slightly better, getting 1 TD on a 75 yard punt return and just 1 on offense. But with Breech also outkicking Del Greco, it was no surprise to see Cincinnati win. Final score 28-9
Both teams had several receivers averaging for over 10 yards / catch, but only Moon had Givins catching 7 throws for over 100 yards. Moon himself was 28/54 for 344 yards. Anderson had just 21 completions for 203 yards, but had Johnson to help him get close enough for some TD's.
'05 Jacksonville vs. '06 San Diego
The Jags and Chargers fought a close battle at Qualcomm Stadium, with over 61,000 fans attending. Each team would score just 1 TD all game, which put the pressure on FG kickers as defensive units put up some strong holds. The Chargers 2 first half FG's were more than the late one by Jacksonville, but with Kaeding having 3 attempts, the Chargers showed better control of the game. San Diego wins 12-10
Neither QB did great, each completing just half of their throws and struggling for 200 yards. The Jags, to their credit, did have Smith take most of their catches, with 9 receptions for 133 yards. San Diego, on the other hand, dominated mostly with the help of LT, whose 20 carries for 132 yards and 1 TD helped wear down the clock as much as the Jags.
'94 San Francisco vs. '05 Seattle
The Niners and Seahawks faced off in Seattle for a close match. After a scoreless first quarter, the Niners took an early lead with back-to-back TD's by Ricky Watters. Alexander would put up 1 of his own, but not before San Francisco would also nail a last second FG to lead 17-7 at the half.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Seattle took the lead 21-17 with their own set of back-to-back TD's. With under 5 minutes to go, Young had his work cut out for him. But slow and steady wins the race, as they say, and Young was steadily able to move the ball against Seattle, hitting Brent Jones in the end zone with just 32 seconds of game time left. Niners win 24-21.
Shawn Alexander killed it on the ground with 27 carries for 157 yards and 2 TD's. His teammate Hasselbeck only fared mild, with 19 completions for just over 200 yards. With 2 INTs but no TD's, he was overshadowed by Young, who threw for 2 TDs. Young was 27/37 for 230 yards.
'92 New Orleans vs. '06 Chicago
After a super showing last week by Hebert, the Saints were ready to take on the Bears at Soldier Field. They would find it a bit harder to score against Chicago, however. In the 1st quarter they met a Bears FG with a Heyward TD, but both teams actually showed up strong on D, After many 4-and-outs, the game remained 7-3 at halftime. Chicago would take the lead late in the 3rd quarter on a bomb by Grossman to Berrian, but the Saints would come right back in the 4th quarter. With it being a 1-score game, and defense performing so well, the Bears would need just the right plays to get a win. They would get it just minutes later, and Jones would run 11 for the TD to go up. The Saints were held off from there on and the Bears win 17-14.
The Saints had several carriers tally up 175 yards, which was far more than Hebert could get. Dunbar led with 17 carries for 72 yards. Hebert had no trouble completing passes at 21/37, but with just 152 yards it was the threatening throws that he lacked. Grossman, in just 17 completions, threw for 226 yards.
'77 Dallas vs. '80 Philadelphia
The Cowboys showed up at Vet Stadium to take on the Eagles, but didn't appear to really be there. The usually tough Cowboys D was trampled on by Jaworski, and Staubach appeared shell-shocked by the big green D. Completing just 10 throws for 102 yards, Dorsett and Newhouse combined for more yardage. The Eagles win 34-3.
Despite no breakout performances, the Eagles spread the ball well and came up with several great throws. Jaworski had 61.5% completion for 387 yards, with 3 TDs thanks to a pair of long throws that hit their targets for over 50 yards each.
'79 Tampa Bay vs. '08 NY Giants
The Bucs travelled to NY to try and get some more wins under their belt, but would come home with nothing but a big goose egg. The Giants shut out Tampa Bay in a wild 44-0 romp, picking up 458 yards total offense to the Bucs 132.
The first half was all Ward TD throws, with a late Carney FG thrown in to increase the lead. Manning would light things up in the 2nd half, setting up for more Carney FG's and landing a TD in the air. Williams did so poorly for Tampa Bay that he only completed 8/29 and threw 5 INT's.
