'19 Kansas City vs. '80 Buffalo

With most teams in the AFC at 3-2 right now, this matchup presents a chance for Mahomes to get back on track, or for Buffalo to show their recent wins weren't just flukes. At Rich Stadium, over 81,000 fans showed up to see what would happen. And after a Buffalo TD run by Cribbs late in the 1st quarter, Bills fans were shouting. And as several 4-and-outs came and went, things seemed certain. But just inside the 2 minute warning before half, Mahomes caught fire, and the rest of the game was history. Connecting to Hardman on a 20 yard TD throw was just the start of what would continue to be KC dominance in the 2nd half. Buffalo continued struggling on offense, but Mahomes found ways to pass and run his way to scores. The game was 28-7 by late 4th quarter, and a Safety against Buffalo just proved to be more salt in the wound. Chiefs win 30-7

The Bills totaled just 278 yards offense, with Cribbs and Brown at least putting up over half that on the ground. But Ferguson completed just 36% of his throws - 14 completions total. Mahomes, on the other hand, almost hit 400 yards in 28 throws, and despite having 2 INT's to match his 3 TD's, left the stadium smiling. Kelce led in receiving with 8 grabs for 95 yards. McCoy had a great rushing game too with 80 yards on 13 carries.

'06 Chicago vs. '08 Carolina

The Bears faced off against the Panthers at Bank of America, in what is one of the highest scoring games witnessed in the league so far. A quarter didn't go by that had fewer than 3 scores, as both teams fought to outpace each other. Defense was almost non-existent as the Bears took a 17-10 lead in Q1, with a run by Jones and a 73-yard stunner by Grossman outshining Delhomme's TD pass to Muhammad.

Carolina flipped the script in the 2nd Q, with another Delhomme TD throw and a Williams rushing TD putting Carolina up by 4 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, each team scored on offense, and then each team scored on defense/special teams. Chicago, with a 91 yard kick return by Hester, was immediately rebuked by a 57 yard INT return by Carolina's Lucas. With Carolina getting a rushing TD early in Q4, the 11 point deficit became harder for Chicago. Grossman would get another TD inside the 2-minute warning, but the Panthers would control the ball from there. Carolina wins 45-40

Both teams exceeded 400 yards throwing and 160 yards rushing; a total of 49 first downs among the 2 teams. The Bears, with 14 penalties, definitely hurt their chances, but also only converted 8 / 15 of their 3rd downs. Jones had 14 carries for Chicago, but very few yards to back them up. For Carolina, on the other hand, Williams had 21 carries for 107 yards and 2 TDs; Stewart was close behind with 15 carries for 80.

In the air, Muhammad and Steve Smith each caught 9 passes, but only Muhammad averaged almost 18 yards / catch. Chicago's Bradley, on the other hand, averaged over double that with 151 yards in just 4 catches.

'87 Cleveland vs. '04 Pittsburgh

The Browns and Steelers met up in a game that would be known more for it's stalemate than for it's explosive offense. Despite some great efforts, the game remained scoreless for almost the first half. It wasn't until the 2-minute warning the Steelers got in the Red Zone for the first time, and Haynes carried the ball for a TD. By 3rd quarter, Cleveland would tie on a Kosar-Brennan pass, but the game would remain tied for several minutes afterwards. The Steelers did eventually get moving again, and halfway through Q4 Roethlisberger found Antoine Randle-El in the end zone to take the lead. It would be the last score of the hard fought game. Steelers win 14-7

Both QB's completed 60% of their throws, but it was Roethlisberger's insane 4 picks that made the Pittsburgh win all that much more surprising. Kosar clearly fared cleaner for accuracy and had more yards. Nobody broke 100 yards on the day, but Bettis and Staley combined for almost 140 yards for Pittsburgh. Cleveland had just 17 yards rushing after a few Kosar sacks cut their gains in half. Finally, Cleveland's Jaeger missed all 3 FG attempts throughout the game, giving fans more than enough reason to call for his head in a 7 point loss.

'18 Texans vs. '93 Oilers

After an insane 1st quarter, DeShaun Watson was on fire and with 3 TD passes, seemed unstoppable. In fact, as the 2nd quarter continued to see the Oilers struggle, a Texans FG seemed to seal the game. But just seconds later, the Oilers got some key blocks in for Brown to make a surprise dash to the end zone.

Down 24-7, 30 minutes of football remained, and Warren Moon still had some tricks up his sleeve. Although the 3rd quarter was a stalemate, Moon was able to make some magic happen in Q4 as the Oilers D continued to hold of the Texans. Moon would find Brown this time in the end zone early in Q4, and suddenly the Oilers had a chance. In fact, they would go on to score a TD with 2-point conversion, but it wouldn't happen until the final seconds of the game. Without anymore time for tricks, the Oilers would lose 24-22

Brown carried for over 130 yards, while Hopkins had a great day for the Texans with over 100 yards receiving. Unsurprisingly, Watson turned out the better passing performance, by small margins. With 267 yards, 3 TDs and just 1 pick in 30 pass plays, he almost doubled the yards/catch of Moon's efforts in 51 pass plays.

'06 Baltimore vs. '80 Philadelphia

The tale of 2 defenses turned out a low scoring game in Veterans Stadium, with just over 69,000 fans attending. Neither team was able to run for much, but with Jaworski tossing for almost 100 yards more than McNair, it's a surprise more scores weren't made. But it's well known how tough Baltimore's secondary would be, and they would need to be tough. After letting a Jaworski toss to Carmicheal slip early in the 1st quarter, the Ravens would stalemate the Eagles for most of the game.

Over 40 minutes of time would pass on the clock before the Ravens would get close enough to kick a FG. After repeating this feat again minutes later, the 7-6 game now seemed to favor nobody but the opportunistic. So as Jaworski moved the ball inside the 2-minute warning, it took just a few key plays to set the Eagles up for a FG. Franklin attempted his only, and the only one that would count - and split the uprights for the Green. Eagles win 10-6

In addition to almost getting 300 yards, Jaworski's 72% completion was stellar. At 1 TD and 2 throws, he didn't have his best game, but by comparison McNair failed to complete any end zone passes and was picked by the Eagles 3 times. Carmicheal had a great day receiving, with 7 catches for an outstanding 145 yards.

'70 Detroit vs. '05 Jacksonville

The home town Jaguars were the only team to score all 1st quarter, with 2 TD runs from Taylor giving them the 14-0 edge. But it was the Lions who would have an explosive 2nd quarter. After an early rushing TD from Owens, and a few 4 and outs, Munson would connect to Sanders on a 38 yard throw. Detroit to tie the game. They would quickly get the ball back from Jacksonville, setting up for an Eddy TD run to lead. Then by shear luck, just 1 minute later they would score the last 3 of their 24 points in 1 quarter. The lead at halftime gave everyone in Jacksonville a scare.

Lucky for Jags fans, the Jaguar D would strengthen up in the 2nd half, giving Leftwich better position to work from on offense. And work he did, mixing rush and pass for 2 3rd quarter TD's to get back in the lead. With Detroit's chances dwindling, a Safety against the Lions would refresh the Jags for the 4th quarter. They would continue to score and toke home the win, proving consistency in the long run is key to football. Jags 40, Lions 24

Taylor and Jones ran for almost 170 yards combined and 3 TD's, accounting for over half of Jacksonville's points.  Leftwich helped get the rest in the air, completing 21 for 214 yards and 2 picks to match. Sanders had 6 catches for 101 yards for Detroit.

'10 Atlanta vs. '98 Minnesota

The usually high-flying Vikings found Atlanta's D tougher to work their magic on, but their efforts still yielded 2 TD's in the first half. Cunningham would hit both Moss and Reed in the end zone, giving them a 14-0 halftime lead. It was the Falcons who struggled more, failing to score against the curtain of purple. Things would turn around for Atlanta in the 2nd half, with Ryan finding Snelling for a pass and Bryant hitting a FG from 29 yards out. Vikings still win, 14-10

Turner led in rushing for Atlanta, running for 131 yards. Both QB's had 70% completion. but with 2 TDs, 0 INTs and 289 yards, Cunningham certainly stole the air show.

'81 Cincinnati vs. '07 Indianapolis

The Colts had an easy time at home with the Bengals, racking up 4 TD's in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, and a handful of Viniatieri FG's to outpace the Bengal's 2 TD's. There was no silver lining for Cincinnati, as Indianapolis won by doubling the Bengal's points, 37-18. On the ground, the Colts combined for over 140 yards to Cincinnati's 107. But more impressively, Manning put the ball in the air twice as much as the Bengals, completing 65% for 335 yards and 2 TD's. And it's no surprise, seeing that Indianapolis had the ball for an entire quarter longer than Cincinnati with 37 minutes possession.

One reason for the high ball time by the Colts was their 3rd down conversion rate of 2/3. The Bengals only converted 2 third down efforts of 12.

'83 Washington vs. '08 NY Giants

The Redskins had a terrible day against the Giants, almost not even showing up against their division rivals. For some reason they just couldn't get their offense together, totaling just 125 yards against Big Blue. A Riggins TD was their only score. Theisman completed only 11/33.

The Giants, on the other hand, totaled almost 500 yards offense, seeming to score with every possession they had. Jcaobs and Ward combined for over 150 yards on the ground and 3 TD's, and manning tossed for 322 yards in just 23 completions, throwing for 2 TD's. With a longest of 52, and several others making 25+ yard plays, it was clearly more about quality than quantity for Eli's passing game. Giants win 37-7.

'84 Miami vs. '15 Denver

Over 77,000 fans showed up Sports Authority field to watch Manning's Broncos try to outdo Marino's Dolphins. With the home team getting 5 points early in the game,  on a Safety and a FG, the fans were in high gear. As Manning was making attempt at a 3rd scoring effort, the Dolphin's Blackwood picked him off early and ran it for a 16 yard TD, putting momentum on Miami's side.

After some 4 and outs, the Dolphins would get in the end zone on the ground - which seemed to be their most effective route against Denver. Manning would go on to toss a pair of TD's in the 2nd quarter, while Miami's rush efforts yielded another TD. The Dolphins led 20-18 at half.

The 2nd half continued in Miami's favor, but with a whole quarter to go, the 9 point deficit for Manning was not one to scare him off. In fact, after a TD throw to Fowler with 5 minutes to go, the game would be tied. With the win up in the air, the home town fans went wild when on Miami's next play, they would fumble and the Broncos would grab it and take it all the way. Broncos win 34-27.

Anderson broke 100 yards on the day rushing for Indy, but of course everyone came for the air show. And for Marino, Clayton would not disappoint - chalking up 152 yards in just 6 catches. At 275 yards total, it was Marino's 4 picks that would end up costing the Dolphins more than any other effort. Manning, despite the win, had very few big plays and only 180 yards throwing. In fact, Manning had 4 INT's of his own, but his 3 TD's would help give the Colts an edge.

'98 NY Jets vs. '06 San Diego

The Chargers and Jets had a game much similar to Miami vs. Denver, and in fact the final score was the same. But who beat who? Well, the Chargers got the first TD, but the Jets put in a Safety on Rivers in the 2nd quarter. They failed to capitalize on it, however, and a SD field goal put them up 10-2. In the last 5 minutes of 2nd quarter, the Jets would get a FG and TD with 2-point, leading 13-10 at the half.

The third quarter continued to see a good effort by the Jets, who were able to put up 2 TD's on offense. But the Chargers matched 1 rushing TD on offense, and had a spectacular 96-yard KO return for TD by Turner. Still up by 3 and 1 quarter to go, an early SD field goal was much later answered by a NY TD throw by Testaverde. The Jets defense clearly played tough and held Rivers off, giving them the win 34-27 over the Chargers.

Tomlinson had a great day rushing with 127 yards and a 4.9 / carry average. It was Rivers who struggled for the Chargers, completing just 14 throws for 141 yards and no scores. Testaverde, on the other hand, threw 3 TDs among his 367 yards. Johnson had over 100 yards receiving for the Jets.

'01 Green Bay vs. '79 Tampa Bay

The Bucs got off to a good start with 2 TD passes from Williams of over 50 yards. It seemed the Packers secondary was broken, but the Packers put up 2 scores of their own in the 2nd quarter. Tampa Bay would squeeze in a late FG, putting the Bucs up by 7 at the half. Unfortunately, after the fear of Williams deep threat passed, the Packers defense found a way to hold off Tampa for the 2nd half, while Favre continued to run and pass his way to separate 3 TD's. Packers win 31-17.

Favre of course had a good day, completing 26 throws  for just 180 yards, but 2 TD's. Green Bay's win is due more to their ability to complement their aerial assault with over 160 yards rushing by Green in just 29 carries. With Williams 2 deep ball TD's, he managed to throw for 285 yards in just 16 completions, but he was plagued by INT's, throwing an outrageous 6 on the day. Sharper, Williams and Wayne for Green Bay had 2 INT's each, but it was Wayne's 80 yard INT return that shocked the Bucs and setup for an easy GB score.

'99 Rams vs. '94 San Francisco

The Greatest Show on Turf travelled to Candlestick Park to put their talent up against Steve Young and crew of the Niners. And while nobody was surprised at St. Louis' high scoring performance, it would be the Niners toe-to-toe response that had San Fran fans rowdy.  In fact, it would be a Young-Jones TD pass that would start the game. Warner would retaliate quickly with a TD throw to Holt. Minutes later, Young would repeat a TD throw to Jones to take the 14-7 lead for the 2nd quarter.

At this point things were just warming up, with the Rams and and 49ers trading scores 4 times.  A Faulk TD pass for the tie was met with a TD run on a reverse play with Jerry Rice.  After a 49ers FG, the Rams got a rushing TD of their own, and would cough up the ball to San Fran on their next possession. This fumble would put the Red and Gold in the end zone. After quickly turning the ball around again, the Niners would get Watters in the end zone with just 1 minute of play left before the half. But down 38-21, Warner would still squeeze in TD in just 30 seconds of game play. Niners led just 38-28 at half.

With a full game score already taking place in 2 quarters of football, things quieted down some in the 2nd half. Each team would find their own way to score, but at 14 points total each, the Niners would take home the surprise win, deflating the Rams' perfect score to-date. 49ers 52, Rams 42.

The Niners pulled off over 140 yards rushing, and Young had 350 yards throwing in 30 completions, with 2 TD's in the air. Warner, on 10 fewer passes, tossed over 400 yards and 4 TD's, clearly showing the better performance. So with the ground game for each team yielding similar TD's, the game really came down to San Fran being able to make several FG's, and the Rams not ever falling in a position to try. Holt and Hakim each broke 100 yards receiving (Hakim on just 2 plays!), with Brent Jones breaking 100 yards for San Fran. Rice and Watters were close by with over 85 yards receiving each.

'74 Cardinals vs. '77 Cowboys

The Cowboys seemed to have an easy day with the Cardinals, putting up score after score to beat the birds 38-13. With over 200 yards rushing and 300 yards passing, the Cowboys put up twice the offensive yards of St. Louis. Metcalf and Anderson ran up over 140 yards on their own for St. Louis, but Hart's 32% abysmal completion yielded an unsurprising 137 yards. For Dallas, Dorsett of course averaged 5 yards / carry with 110 yards total. Pearson had over 100 yards receiving.
