Week 2 Results [GFL]
'81 Cincinnati vs. '87 Cleveland
Ken Anderson showed off his superstar credentials in a win against the Browns, as he tossed or ran his way for all Bengals scores. Not only did he complete 20 passes for over 300 yards, but he had an amazing 56 yard TD run. Kosar performed well for Cleveland, but had to settle for FG's too often, getting his first passing TD in the 4th quarter. Webster Slaughter had 100 yards on the day. Cincinnati 21, Cleveland 13.
'10 Atlanta vs. '77 Dallas
The dangerous Atlanta defense held Staubach and Co. to just 10 points as the Falcons embarrassed the Cowboys in Texas, 23-10. Matt Ryan may have had trouble getting in the end zone, but no problems getting in FG range all day with the help of Michael Turner. Turner, who had 111 yards on 20 carries, grabbed the only offensive TD for Atlanta. Weems on special teams picked up the other on KO return. Staubach, who had an abysmal performance with 1 TD, 3 picks and just 87 yards - was the only one to throw a TD.
'08 Carolina vs. '79 Tampa Bay
After a slight lead at halftime, the Buccaneers saw their hopes slip away as Delhomme had an explosive 3rd quarter, throwing for 2 TDs. But the Tampa Bay defense would hold up in Q4, and Bell's rushing efforts would continue to move the Buccs in scoring range, giving them a 7 point lead by the 2-minute warning. Carolina could not match the effort. Tampa Bay wins 31-24. Bell, who averaged over 7 yards per carry, pushed through for a whopping 173 yards on the day, with 2 Bucs TDs.
'70 Detroit vs. '01 Green Bay
Favre was on fire against a struggling Lions team, completing 62% of his throws for 235 yards, but putting up 3 TDs. Detroit just barely mustered 150 yards offense, with only 16 of that coming off 30+ rushing attempts. Needless to say, Green Bay's defense simply shut down the Lions, picking up an easy win 27-10.
'05 Jaguars vs. '93 Oilers
The Oilers met the Jags at the Astrodome in a high scoring offensive shootout. With over 800 yards offense total, it was Jacksonville's inability to stop the rushing game that ultimately cost them. Gary Brown, in just 18 carries for Houston, tallied up over 160 yards, averaging 9 per carry with 1 rushing TD. Leftwich and Moon both made over 40 passing attempts, with Leftwich's 4 TDs showing an impressive comeback effort. But ultimately, it would fall short, as Houston won 40-35.
'99 Rams vs. '80 Eagles
The Rams had no problems silencing the Eagles at Vet Stadium. Despite the Eagles putting up a stellar offensive performance, the Rams were able to score on several fronts and take advantage of good ball position with some Field Goals. They scored on Field Goals, they scored on Defense (Safety) and even Special Teams (an 83 yard KO return). Surprisingly, the only front they didn't score on was Warner's passing. The Eagles offense had no trouble exploiting the Rams, showing they could make progress with practically any player on the team. Unfortunately for Jaworski, that progress fell short of the end zone a few times too many. St. Louis 37, Philly 26.
'94 49ers vs. '98 Jets
The Niners had an easy time taking out the Jets, with Ricky Watters practically carrying the San Fran offense. NY was held to just 1 TD and 2 FG's, as the Red and Gold shut down the Jets. Martin ran over 100 yards for the Jets but Testaverde just couldn't get a score. Young, on the other hand, passed for over 300 yards and 2 TD's. Ricky Watters was his primary target with almost half those yards, and put up 64 on the ground as well.
'08 Giants vs. '06 Bears
The Bears had a close game against the Giants. New York, after leading 10-0, saw their lead disappear after Hester darted in the end zone on an 89 yard kickoff return. From there, the Bears were kept out of the end zone by NY but lined up several 3-pointers throughout the game. Their defense held Manning, who was short of 200 yards for the day, out of the end zone.
After 6 drives from Chicago resulting in FG attempts (for which Gould made 4), the Giants 19-10 deficit was shortened within 2 points on a great effort by Manning inside the 2 minute warning. But it was too late, as Chicago wore down the clock and grabbed the W. Bears 19, Giants 17
'80 Buffalo vs. '84 Miami
After last week's several scores by the Dolphins still fell short of earning them a W, they showed no sign of giving up on those efforts against the Bills. Buffalo, which has kept a fantastic run game moving with the double threat of Cribbs and Brown, still managed to struggle scoring despite racking up 170 yards. Marino, on the other hand, had no problems hitting Duper and Clayton for scores, completing 2/3 of his throws for 285 yards and 4 total TD's. Duper came up on the bigger end of the deadly duo with 113 yards receiving. Miami's slaughter of Buffalo was so efficient that Von Schaman's 3 missed FG's were totally overlooked by Shula. Miami 33, Buffalo 144
'15 Denver vs. '04 Pittsburgh
The Broncos and Steelers met up at Heinz Field, and in a throwdown showdown for the ages, Manning and Roethlisberger both did not disappoint. In fact, this game came down to Defensive performance, as both QB's were even on Attempts, Completions, TD's (0!) and INT's (3). It would be easy to think, then, that Bruton's IR for a score would put Denver in the W column. But Pittsburgh's run game, despite struggles, picked up an extra TD that Denver did not.
In the end, this put both teams in a spot to TIE, once Steelers kicker Reed made good on a late attempt in the 2-minute warning. Overall, a great display of how matched both teams are.
'98 Minnesota vs. '07 Indianapolis
The explosive Vikings team of last week was nowhere to be found against the Colts. Despite Cunningham throwing for the game's first TD, he would not find himself making it in the end zone for the rest of the game. Manning, on the other hand, would throw for 3 TDs, almost hitting 300 yards with 81% completion. Wayne for IND and Carter for MIN both caught for over 100 yards, but with the Vikings racking up 7 penalties it would prove difficult to make any decent progress.
Colts 30, Vikings 10
'83 Redskins vs. '74 Cardinals
In another well matched game, the Cardinals had an easy 1st half lead that started to fall apart in the 2nd half as Theisman got his offense together and was able to get past FG range and into the end zone. After tying the game at 20, however, the Cardinals would fight hard for a 1 yard TD run to go in the lead with just 3 minutes left. The Skins never recovered. Redskins lose 27-20
Nobody really looked great for either team, though Riggins racked up the most rushing yards of any back at 92. Overall, just an average game, but sometimes that's how the greats can make it look.
'19 Kansas City vs. '06 San Diego
The Chargers and Chiefs had a high flying, high scoring offensive shootout which resulted in, get this, 986 yards total for the game. Mahomes threw for over a whopping 400 yards, but the Chargers almost matched this effort on the ground with Tomlinson taking 30 carries for 195 yards just on his own effort.
Mahomes hit as many as 10 different receivers, but only Hill would break 100 yards on the day for the Chiefs. In just 3 catches, the Charger's Parker would put 132 yards on his record for the day.
Despite such great effort on both sides, it was the first quarter dominance by the Chargers that would be the determining factor in earning the W. More specifically, it was a last minute effort in Q2 where the Chargers scored twice in just 60 seconds after a phenomenal defensive performance. Those 2 scores gave San Diego the edge in the end, 49-35.
'06 Ravens vs. '18 Texans
DeShaun Watson led the Texans to a 25-7 romp over the Ravens. Completing 34/43, he tossed for over 340 yards, despite being unable to run past the Baltimore defense. He had trouble getting in the endzone, but Fairbairn was 4/4 to help Houston stay on track. The Texans defense showed up strongest, holding the Ravens to just 182 yards total. Neither team had a great rushing performance.
'16 New England vs. '05 Seattle
Tom Brady and the Patriots picked apart the Seattle defense for most of the game, which saw Hasselbeck struggle to lead. Alexander put up over 100 yards for the day on the ground, but 'Beck was just over 50% completion and under 200 yards. Brady's efforts were, as usual, was consistent, as he threw for 3 TD's in his 40 attempts, with no picks, and hit 270 on yardage. Patriots win 35-24.
'92 New Orleans vs. '00 Oakland
After the home town raiders grabbed the first score of the game, Oakland fans were ready for an exciting game. But as the first half went on, Hebert was able to setup for several Morten Anderson field goals as the Saints held off Gannon and crew. Andersen in fact made 4 FG's in a row, giving the Saints a 12-7 lead at half. Andersen was 5/5 on the day. Oakland staged a comeback in the 2nd half on their ground attack, with Wheatley setting up for several TDs by himself and his teammates. Wheatley averaged an amazing 8.8 yards per carry for 159 total.
