Week 14 - Monday
'86 NY Giants vs. '17 Philadelphia
Over 73,000 fans packed Lincoln Financial field for a divisional matchup with significant implications. With a Redskins loss yesterday, the Eagles need a win to get on top of the NFC East. If NY wins, their playoff hopes remain. For most of the game, fans would not be disappointed with the showdown they got either. The first half saw both teams trading TD's. On the opening drive, Phil Simms grabbed a fast TD after finding Johnson open, who would take the ball 65 yards.
Philadelphia's next possession would see Carson Wentz drive in enemy territory only for Ajayi to power through the Giants for a 33 yard TD.
Simms would throw another TD pass before the 1st quarter was over, and the 2nd quarter would see each team slow in momentum. But Wentz would get a 2nd TD throw just inside the final 3 minutes.
With a tie at halftime, and the Eagles set to receive, the game belonged to anyone. But both defenses were on task, and each team was held to just a FG. The game would remain tied 13-13, but Philadelphia's offense started to wear NY down, with Clement running for a TD before the 4th quarter.
With the Eagles up just 24-17 for the 4th quarter, what would happen in the next 15 minutes of football is what would shock fans everywhere. The Eagles would score 2 unanswered TD's before the 2 minute warning. With the Giants getting the ball, they still had some time - but the Eagles D shut down NY again. With nothing but time to kill but no timeouts, Wentz would throw another TD pass with just 30 seconds left in the game. NY, with just 1 final possession left, put it all on the line with a hail mary in the final seconds of the game. But like salt in an open wound, Philadelphia would not only get the pick, but Mills would return it 77 yards for yet another score.
So on the strength of an astonishing record 27 points in 1 quarter, the Eagles blow up New York, 51-17. Went was 30-35 (85%) against a typically strong NY secondary and racked up 380 yards and 2 TD's. Practically everyone on the Philly offense had a catch.
The Eagles also rushed for 138 yards and 4 TDs, to rack up 494 total yards on the day. The Giants rushing game, on the other hand, was held to just 49 yards. Simms had over 200 yards on the day for 15 throws, but with NY's 22 minutes of ball time, it just wasn't enough to make a dent in the Eagles. Philly also had 34 1st downs to NY's 15 and 11 third down conversions to NY's 3.
