Week 9 - Monday
'92 Dallas vs. '86 New York
The 2 bottom teams in the NFC East face-off at Giants Stadium. Both teams have tons of potential and both teams have struggled to make things work in their favor. Both teams are also well balanced, however, so I anticipate nothing but a good match-up.New York opened the game by kicking off to Dallas, whom Aikman slowly took down field with some well timed throws to setup for an easy Smith run at 2 yards out to get the first score.
The Giants had a harder time moving the ball, and despite punting to Dallas inside the 10, struggled to stop the Cowboys from reaching the red zone. Only a turnover would hold Dallas from scoring, but the Cowboys D quickly forced NY to a punt. which Martin sped 89 yards for a TD to put Dallas up 14-0.
New York finally started moving the ball in the 2nd quarter, but would settle for a FG at first. But it would be just enough to keep them in the game, as LT and crew started putting the pressure on Aikman and Smith and holding them from any further scores in the 1st half.
Down 14-3 at the 2nd half, New York received the ball and appeared refreshed. Simms, on the opening drive, found Bavaro for 49 yards, setting up an easy Morris run for 6. One turnover later, and the Giants found themselves down by just 1 after an Allegre FG from 33 yards out.
Dallas, in typical fashion, continued pushing ahead slowly and taking time off the clock, but New York kept them out of the end zone. Settling for an Elliot FG, the Giants saw their opportunity to pull ahead.
With the 4th quarter rolling around, the Giants continued fighting as The Big Blue Wrecking Crew put some heavy hits on Dallas for negative yards. Several times Dallas found themselves just inside their 10 after some perfect Landeta punts, and that turned into good field position for New York/ With those opportunities, SImms finally found a way into the end zone to take a 3 point lead on an 8 yard pass to Manuel.
With just 4 minutes left in the game, Aikman kept his composure and drove down field fast, putting together his first scoring drive in some time, getting a 1 yarder to Martin to go up 24-20.
The Giants would have just 2:30 on the clock to score, however. But Simms made good work of his timeouts to make it happen. With a little over 1 minute on the clock, he found Johnson in the end zone for a 19 yard throw to go up 27-24.
From there, the Big Blue Wrecking Crew spread out and stopped Aikman from making any big plays.
The Giants take home the hard-fought win, 27-24.
Both teams rushed for over 100 yards, but it was Simms who came up big with over 300 yards passing on 20/34 throws and 2 TDs. Aikam nwas more efficient, but was only held to 222 yards by NY's defense. Dallas continues their losing streak with 7 straight now, and they tie Cleveland for the worst record.
