Week 2 - Monday Night

'69 Jets vs. '69 Browns

The NY Jets welcomed the Cleveland Browns to Shea Stadium in their 2nd home game of the year. The weather was good and the wind stayed at bay, making it a great day for an offensive shootout.

The Jets and Cleveland traded big plays back and forth all day. The Browns easily scored on their first drive, with Nelsen find Glass for 51 yards. But the Jets were right back in the game after a 69 yard run by Snell put them near the goal line. But just as Namath picked up momentum with another score, Morrison came through for Cleveland with a 33 yard receiving TD. The game was tied at the half but wouldn't remain so for long.

The Jets received the ball in the 2nd half, giving Namath a chance to score on his first drive with a 45 yard pass and put the Jets in the lead. From there things just went south for Cleveland after some poor ball position gave Boozer a chance this time to run 28 yards for another score.

Cleveland did eventually get back to the red zone, and with a bold 4th down call, Nelsen threw a 5 yard pass to Collins to put the Browns within 7. But Namath just kept his cool, helping the Jets to pick up another FG and TD. New York grabs a big W by a margin of 41-24.

Now when I say this game had lots of big plays, I do not exaggerate. Just look at these numbers:
  • Bill Glass, '69 Cleveland: 3 catches, 126 yards. 1 TD for 51 yards and 1 catch for 60 yards.
  • Warfield, 69 Clevelenad: 43 yard catch
  • R. Morrison, '69 Cleveland: 32 yard reception
  • Morin, '69 Cleveland: 36 yard reception
  • George Sauer, '68 NY: 5 catches, 122 yards, his longest a 40 yarder.
  • Snell, '68 NY: 69 yard TD run
  • Boozer, '68 NY: a 28 yard run
Both QB's averaged close to 18 yards per catch, and Snell came up big to add another 84 yards to his running game for a total of 153 with a 9.6 yard average.

Speaking of big numbers, we had almost 1,000 yards total offense by both teams combined.
Cleveland put up 421 yards, 376 of those on the throw. But look at NY - 248 yards rushing and 296 passing, for a total 544 yards.

Numbers clearly can't account for efficiency, but it's easy to how the Jets came on top here and gave the 57,000+ fans in attendance an exciting show.

That's all for LFL this week, I'll wait until we get through week 4 to bring up league stats and leaders again. Perhaps next week I'll make sure to fill everyone in on the league standings.

Until then, tune in this Thursday for another matchup with a perfect record on the line, as 2 of the
hottest teams in the league square off. Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, only in the LFL!
